HPE rack servers — Dell PowerEdge and HPE ProLiant

Rack servers are the single largest line on most data centre purchase orders, and the one where specification error is most expensive. A chassis is not one product: the same Dell PowerEdge R730xd model number covers twelve-bay and twenty-six-bay backplanes, three RAID controller generations and four power supply ratings, and a unit bought against the wrong backplane cannot be made to take the drives you already own. The configurations listed here are given in full — drive bay count and form factor, RAID controller, PSU rating and count, PCIe riser layout and processor socket — because that detail is what decides whether a machine drops into your rack or goes back.

How to read these part numbers

Every configuration is written in the same order: model, memory slot count, RAID controller, management controller, power supply rating and count, PCIe slot count, network daughter card, drive bay count and form factor, and processor socket. So `R730xd 24xDDR4 H730 Mini iDRAC8 2x750W PSU 3xPCIe 3.0 Ethernet 4x1Gb/s 24x2.5"+2x2.5"` is a twenty-four-bay small-form-factor chassis with a rear two-bay cage, H730 RAID, dual 750W supplies and three PCIe slots. `FCLGA2011-3` and `FCLGA3647` give the processor socket, which determines which Xeon generation the chassis accepts.

Ordering notes

Confirm four things on the order: the drive bay count and form factor, because the backplane is not field-convertible between 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch; the RAID controller, because H330 is entry-level with no cache and H730/H730P carry cache and battery backup; the processor socket, because FCLGA2011-3 takes Xeon E5 v3 and v4 while FCLGA3647 takes first and second generation Xeon Scalable; and whether rails and bezel are required, since these are quoted separately.

Lifecycle and availability

The Dell 13th generation (R630, R730, R730xd) and HP ProLiant Gen9 lines are past end of sale and are supplied as refurbished or new-old-stock. Dell 14th generation (R640, R740, R740xd) and HPE Gen10 remain in wide production support. Condition is stated on every quotation before you commit, and no manufacturer warranty applies to end-of-sale hardware.

Equipment condition

New — factory-sealed, supplied through the manufacturer's own channel or a qualified distributor, with full manufacturer warranty.

New surplus — unused factory stock, original packaging where available, sourced from decommissioned projects or distributor inventory. Manufacturer warranty may have lapsed; CRS PLUS warranty applies.

Refurbished / tested — previously deployed equipment, cleaned, firmware-checked and functionally tested against the manufacturer's specification before shipment. CRS PLUS warranty applies.

Condition is confirmed in writing on every quotation before you commit to an order.

Where equipment is supplied new through the manufacturer's own channel, the manufacturer's warranty applies and is passed to you.
