Casing is the large-diameter pipe cemented in the wellbore to support the hole, isolate formations and contain pressure — run in strings from conductor and surface casing down to production casing. Tubing is the smaller pipe run inside the production casing through which the well produces, and can be pulled and replaced. Both are made to API 5CT; casing is 4½" and larger, tubing 4½" and smaller.
The API monogram is a registered mark that may only be applied by manufacturers holding an API licence for that product specification, confirming the product was made under a quality system audited by API and conforms to the standard. For OCTG it is the primary assurance of conformity, and most operators will not accept tubulars without it. The licence number appears on the certificate and can be verified on the API composite list.
Product specification levels add testing and traceability beyond the base standard. PSL1 is the standard requirement. PSL2 adds mandatory impact testing, tighter chemistry, full-length NDE and additional traceability. PSL3 adds further NDE, wall thickness control and inspection. Deepwater, HPHT and sour wells are commonly specified PSL2 or PSL3.
Sour service — H₂S present above the NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 threshold — requires grades with controlled hardness and heat treatment to resist sulphide stress cracking. L80 type 1, C90 and T95 are the API 5CT sour-service grades. N80 and P110 are not acceptable in sour service. The well programme states whether sour service applies.
They are API 5B thread and coupling types. STC and LTC are short and long round-thread casing connections; BTC is buttress-thread casing, stronger in tension. EUE is external-upset tubing, with a thickened end for a stronger connection; NUE is non-upset tubing. Premium connections — proprietary metal-to-metal seal threads — are specified for gas-tight, high-pressure or deviated wells and are sourced on request.
Size, nominal weight, grade, thread connection, product specification level, length range, quantity in joints or metres, whether sour service applies, the certification level required, and the delivery point. A line from the well programme or the tubular running schedule covers all of this.
Wellhead systems and blowout preventers are original-manufacturer-controlled equipment with serialised pressure-control components and are quoted on request against the well specification, with original manufacturer documentation. CRS PLUS sources wellhead components, API 6A valves and pressure-control spares through its qualified supplier base and does not represent any wellhead manufacturer. Complete BOP stacks are outside the scope of routine supply.
