Valves
Ball valves: floating and trunnion-mounted
CRS PLUS sources ball valves for isolation duty in oil & gas, process and utility piping — floating ball valves for smaller sizes and lower classes, trunnion-mounted ball valves for pipeline and high-pressure service, and forged small-bore valves for instrument and drain lines. Valves are quoted by size, class, bore, end connection, body and trim material and operator.

How a ball valve is specified
A ball valve line gives size, pressure class, bore, end connection, body material, seat and trim, fire-safe requirement and operator — for example "6 in class 150 ball valve, full bore, RF flanged, A105N body, fire-safe, gear operated". Full bore (FB) valves have a bore equal to the pipe and allow pigging and minimum pressure drop; reduced bore (RB) valves are one size smaller through the ball and are lighter and more economical.
Lever operation is usual up to about NPS 4 in class 150; above that, or at higher classes, a gear operator reduces the operating torque. Actuated valves are quoted with the actuator type, supply, fail position and accessories stated.
Floating or trunnion-mounted
In a floating ball valve the ball is held by the seats and line pressure pushes it against the downstream seat to seal. It is simple and compact, and is used in smaller sizes and lower classes. In a trunnion-mounted valve the ball is fixed on upper and lower trunnions and the seats are spring-loaded against it, which keeps operating torque manageable in large sizes and high classes and allows double block and bleed configurations.
Documentation and supply terms
- Mill test certificate
- EN 10204 3.1 certificate for every line, traceable to the heat number marked on the item. EN 10204 3.2 with third-party witness on request.
- Marking
- Material grade, size, rating and heat number marked on each item to the governing standard (MSS SP-25 for valves, flanges and fittings).
- Inspection
- Positive material identification, dimensional checks and third-party inspection arranged where the project specifies them.
- Sour and low-temperature service
- NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 hardness limits and impact testing applied where the piping class calls for them, and stated on the certificate.
- Quotation
- Each line states the standard, grade, origin, lead time and certification before you commit. Listing does not indicate stock held by CRS PLUS.
Frequently asked questions
What does FB mean on a ball valve?
FB means full bore (or full port): the bore through the ball matches the inside diameter of the pipe. RB, reduced bore, means the bore is one size smaller. Full bore is specified where pigging is required or pressure drop matters.
What is a fire-safe ball valve?
A fire-safe valve has been type-tested to API 607 or API 6FA to show it continues to seal, through metal-to-metal back-up seating, after its soft seats are destroyed by fire. It is required on most hydrocarbon service.
What is the difference between API 6D and API 608?
API 6D covers pipeline and piping valves, including trunnion-mounted ball valves, with extensive testing and documentation requirements. API 608 covers metal ball valves for flanged, threaded and welding ends in general refinery and process service, typically floating designs.
Can ball valves be supplied with gear operators?
Yes. Gear operators are quoted where the size and class make lever operation impractical, or where the specification calls for them. Actuated valves can also be quoted with pneumatic or electric actuators.
What documentation comes with a ball valve?
Valves are supplied with EN 10204 3.1 material certificates for pressure-containing parts and a pressure test certificate to API 598 or API 6D. Fire-safe type-test certificates and third-party inspection are provided where specified.
