Trimble and Microsemi GPS/GNSS timing units

Every synchronised base station on a site ultimately traces its clock back to a GPS or GNSS timing receiver, and when that receiver fails the whole site can lose sync even though every radio is working normally. Buyers usually need either a smart antenna to replace a weathered or lightning-damaged unit, or a grandmaster clock — a Trimble Thunderbolt or Microsemi TimeProvider — that provides PTP or NTP timing to a whole site or exchange.

How to read these part numbers

Trimble's Acutime family are combined GPS antenna and receiver units mounted outdoors with a cable run to the equipment room; Thunderbolt and Resolution SMT are receiver/oscillator modules for indoor mounting with an external antenna. Microsemi's TimeProvider range are rack-mounted grandmaster clocks, numbered by generation (2300, 2700, 4100, 5000) with higher numbers generally meaning more capacity and IEEE 1588 PTP support; SyncServer units add NTP serving at volume alongside GNSS timing.

Ordering notes

State whether you need an outdoor smart antenna (Acutime) or an indoor receiver with separate antenna (Thunderbolt, Resolution SMT), and the maximum antenna cable run if outdoor — timing accuracy depends on correct cable delay compensation, which we will flag if your run is unusually long. For grandmaster clocks, confirm whether you need PTP, NTP or both. Condition is stated per quotation — new, new-surplus or refurbished — and where a destination does not admit used network equipment (Algeria is the usual example) we quote new. Hardware only: software licensing remains between the buyer and the manufacturer. Destination type approval and import permits (CST/SABER, TDRA, ICASA, CA, CMC, ARPCE) are the buyer's responsibility and we will say so on the quotation.

Lifecycle and availability

Current Trimble Acutime GG and Resolution SMT 360 remain in production; older Acutime 360, Acutime 2000 and Palisade units are supplied refurbished. Microsemi's TimeProvider 5000 and SyncServer S600/S650 are current production; TimeProvider 1100/2300 are increasingly surplus-only as networks migrate to PTP-capable grandmasters.

Equipment condition

New — factory-sealed, supplied through the manufacturer's authorised channel or an authorised distributor, with full manufacturer warranty.

New surplus — unused factory stock, original packaging where available, sourced from decommissioned projects or distributor inventory. Manufacturer warranty may have lapsed; CRS PLUS warranty applies.

Refurbished / tested — previously deployed equipment, cleaned, firmware-checked and functionally tested against the manufacturer's specification before shipment. CRS PLUS warranty applies.

Condition is confirmed in writing on every quotation before you commit to an order.

Where equipment is supplied new through an authorised channel, the manufacturer's warranty applies and is passed to you.

A smart antenna like the Acutime combines the GNSS receiver and antenna in one outdoor-mounted unit and outputs timing signals over a cable; a disciplined clock like Thunderbolt takes a separate antenna feed and adds an oscillator and distribution outputs indoors.
