How cable and electrical equipment is specified

Cable is defined by a construction code on the datasheet. The parameters below are what the code contains and what an enquiry should state.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between XLPE and PVC insulation?

XLPE, cross-linked polyethylene, has a continuous conductor operating temperature of 90 °C against 70 °C for PVC, so an XLPE cable of the same size carries more current. XLPE also has better dielectric properties and moisture resistance. PVC remains common for small-size internal wiring; XLPE is the standard for LV power distribution and all MV cable.

What does LSZH mean and when is it required?

Low-smoke zero-halogen sheathing produces little smoke and no corrosive halogen acid gas when burning, which protects people and equipment in enclosed spaces. It is specified for control rooms, offshore accommodation, tunnels, substations and anywhere evacuation or equipment survival in a fire matters. Tested to IEC 61034 for smoke and IEC 60754 for halogen content.

Why is single-core cable armoured with aluminium rather than steel?

A single-core AC cable carries an alternating magnetic field. Steel armour is magnetic and would heat through eddy currents and hysteresis, derating the cable. Aluminium is non-magnetic, so single-core cable uses aluminium wire armour. Multi-core cable has balanced fields and uses steel wire armour, which is stronger and cheaper.

What is the difference between IE2 and IE3 motors?

IE classes in IEC 60034-30 define minimum motor efficiency. IE3 premium efficiency is one class above IE2 high efficiency and is mandated for new motors in many jurisdictions. An IE3 motor costs more and runs cooler with lower losses; over a motor’s life the energy saving normally exceeds the price difference. Specify IE3 unless the project or the drive arrangement states otherwise.

When is cable ladder used rather than tray?

Ladder — two side rails with rungs — supports heavier cable runs over longer spans, ventilates well and is the norm for main power routes outdoors and in plants. Perforated tray supports lighter and smaller cables, gives more continuous support and is used for instrumentation and branch circuits. Both are selected on cable weight, span and environment, with hot-dip galvanised finish for outdoor and stainless or GRP for corrosive areas.

What is needed to quote a cable?

The construction — voltage grade, conductor size, number of cores, insulation, armour and sheath — the applicable standard, the length required, drum size preferences and any fire-performance requirement. A cable schedule line or the cable code from the project cable specification is sufficient.

Where is the material sourced from?

CRS PLUS sources cable and electrical equipment from its qualified supplier base of certified manufacturers in China, India, Europe and the Gulf. Origin and the type-test laboratory are stated on each quotation. CRS PLUS does not name manufacturers on this page and holds no distribution or agency agreement with any of them.
