Butt-weld fittings: elbows, tees, reducers and caps
CRS PLUS sources butt-weld pipe fittings to ASME B16.9 — long and short radius elbows, equal and reducing tees, concentric and eccentric reducers, caps and stub ends — in carbon, low-temperature and stainless steel. Fittings are quoted to the size, wall schedule and material grade of the line they join, with mill test certificates.

How a fitting is specified
A butt-weld fitting is defined by its type, nominal size, wall schedule and material — for example "Elbow 90° LR 4 in Sch 80, A234 WPB". Reducing items carry both sizes, large end first ("Reducer conc. 4 × 3 in"). The schedule must match the pipe so the weld bevels line up; where two different schedules meet, the thicker one is normally specified and the fitting is taper-bored.
ASTM A234 WPB is the standard carbon steel grade for ambient and elevated temperature. A420 WPL6 covers low-temperature service, and A403 WP304L / WP316L covers stainless lines. Fittings are made seamless or welded; a seamless fitting is denoted "S" (WPB-S) where the piping class requires it.
Concentric or eccentric reducer
A concentric reducer keeps the centreline of both pipes in line and is used in vertical runs and general piping. An eccentric reducer has one flat side; installed flat side up on pump suction lines it prevents vapour pockets, and flat side down on pipe racks it keeps the bottom of pipe at a constant elevation.
Documentation and supply terms
- Mill test certificate
- EN 10204 3.1 certificate for every line, traceable to the heat number marked on the item. EN 10204 3.2 with third-party witness on request.
- Marking
- Material grade, size, rating and heat number marked on each item to the governing standard (MSS SP-25 for valves, flanges and fittings).
- Inspection
- Positive material identification, dimensional checks and third-party inspection arranged where the project specifies them.
- Sour and low-temperature service
- NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 hardness limits and impact testing applied where the piping class calls for them, and stated on the certificate.
- Quotation
- Each line states the standard, grade, origin, lead time and certification before you commit. Listing does not indicate stock held by CRS PLUS.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a long radius and short radius elbow?
A long radius (LR) elbow has a centreline radius of 1.5 times the nominal pipe size; a short radius (SR) elbow has a radius equal to the nominal size. LR elbows give lower pressure drop and are the default; SR elbows are used where space is restricted.
What does WPB mean on a fitting?
WPB is the carbon steel grade of ASTM A234, the specification for wrought butt-weld fittings for moderate and high temperature service. It corresponds to A106 Grade B pipe, so WPB fittings are used with A106 B and API 5L B pipe.
Is an equal tee the same size on all three ends?
Yes. An equal (straight) tee has the same nominal size on the run and the branch. A reducing tee has a smaller branch, written run size first: "Tee red. 4 × 3 in".
Can fittings be supplied in a different schedule from the pipe?
They can, but the fitting must be bevelled or taper-bored to match the pipe wall at the weld. The simplest route is to quote fittings in the same schedule as the pipe on the line list.
What certification comes with butt-weld fittings?
Each fitting is marked with grade, size, schedule and heat number, and is supplied with an EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate. NACE MR0175 compliance, impact testing and third-party inspection are added where the project specifies them.
