The GLC-TE converts an SFP port into a gigabit RJ45 copper port: a 1000BASE-T SFP for Category 5e cabling up to 100 m. It is used where a switch or router has SFP slots but the device at the other end, or the cabling, is copper — and it is what most buyers mean when they search for an SFP to RJ45 module for Cisco equipment.

Variants and part-number suffixes
GLC-TE is the extended-temperature successor to GLC-T, which is end-of-sale. Both provide a 1000BASE-T RJ45 port; GLC-TE is current and supplied new.
For 10 Gbit/s copper, Cisco offers SFP-10G-T-X, a 10GBASE-T SFP+ for short runs over Cat6a or Cat7, listed on the Cisco optics page.

Before you order
Cisco switches check the vendor code written into each module and will reject or flag an unsupported one, so give the switch model and IOS / IOS XE / NX-OS release with the enquiry. State whether you require genuine Cisco or will accept a Cisco-coded compatible module — we quote both as separate lines and never present one as the other. Is GLC-TE the same as GLC-T?
Both are 1000BASE-T copper SFPs with an RJ45 port. GLC-TE supports an extended temperature range and is the current part; GLC-T is end-of-sale.
Does GLC-TE support 10/100 Mbit/s?
Support for 10 and 100 Mbit/s depends on the switch platform and software release; on many platforms the module runs at 1 Gbit/s only. Tell us the platform and we will confirm.
What is the 10G equivalent of GLC-TE?
SFP-10G-T-X, a 10GBASE-T SFP+ copper module for short runs over Cat6a or Cat7.
