ASCO 8262 and 8263 solenoid valves, coils and rebuild kits

Series 8262 and 8263 are ASCO 2-way direct-acting solenoid valves: 1/8 and 1/4 in NPT (8262) and 3/8 in NPT (8263), normally closed or normally open, in brass or stainless steel bodies. On oil and gas sites they serve as pilot, instrument-air, fuel-gas, sampling and drain valves, often in the NF flameproof or EF explosionproof enclosure. CRS PLUS sources complete valves by catalogue number, replacement coils and rebuild kits, and the related ASCO series used in the same installations.

Figures from the ASCO Series 262/263 catalogue. Maximum operating pressure differential is the AC rating for air / water. Where two catalogue numbers are given, the first is the brass body and the second the stainless steel body. Every line is quoted against its exact catalogue number, voltage and enclosure.

Reading an ASCO catalogue number

An ASCO catalogue number is built from prefix, series, basic number and suffix, for example NF 8262 A142 V. The prefix gives the enclosure and approvals (NF: flameproof aluminium enclosure, ATEX and IECEx; EF: explosionproof, NEMA 7 and 9; SC: spade-plug connector). The series gives the valve body (8262: 2-way direct-acting, 1/8 and 1/4 in; 8263: 3/8 in). The basic number fixes the orifice, function and pressure rating, and suffix letters set the seal material (V: FKM, E: EPDM, J: CR, T: PTFE). Voltage and frequency follow the number, for example 230 V AC 50 Hz.

An X in the prefix marks a special construction built to an ASCO Temporary Parts List (TPL). An X-prefixed valve is quoted against its TPL number or a photograph of the nameplate, because the standard catalogue data does not fully describe it.

Normally closed or normally open

A normally closed valve is shut when the coil is de-energised and opens when power is applied; a normally open valve does the reverse. The function is set by the basic number, not by the enclosure, so the same body and orifice exist in both forms under different numbers.

Before a replacement is ordered, the function, orifice, pipe size, body material, seal material, coil voltage and enclosure should all match the valve in service. Where an enquiry description and the catalogue number point to different valves, the discrepancy is raised with the buyer before a quotation is issued.

Documentation and supply terms

Identification
Each line is quoted against the manufacturer catalogue or part number. Where the correct part depends on the valve model, size or build, these are confirmed from the nameplate or serial number before the quotation is issued.
Condition and origin
Each quotation states the manufacturer, part number, condition (new or new surplus), origin and lead time. An equivalent part is offered only where the original is unavailable, and is identified as an equivalent on the quotation.
Elastomer material
Seal, O-ring and diaphragm material (NBR, FKM, EPDM, CR or FFKM) is stated on every line exactly as coded by the manufacturer, so that the replacement matches the material in service.
Hazardous-area certification
Where an item carries ATEX, IECEx, UL or CSA approval, the certificate reference and declaration of conformity are supplied with it.
Quotation
Listing does not indicate stock held by CRS PLUS. Lead time, certification and warranty are stated per quotation.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between ASCO 8262 and 8263?

Both are 2-way direct-acting solenoid valves of the same design. Series 8262 covers 1/8 and 1/4 in NPT connections; Series 8263 covers 3/8 in NPT.

What does the NF prefix mean on an ASCO valve?

NF denotes a flameproof solenoid enclosure in epoxy-coated aluminium, certified under ATEX and IECEx for gas and dust hazardous areas (Ex db IIC / Ex tb IIIC). WSNF is the same enclosure in 316L stainless steel.

Does a direct-acting solenoid valve need a minimum pressure to operate?

No. Direct-acting valves such as the 8262 and 8263 open and close from zero pressure differential. Pilot-operated valves such as the 8210 need a minimum differential, typically 5 psi, to shift the diaphragm.

Can I replace only the coil?

Yes. Coils are supplied separately. The replacement must match the coil part number, voltage, frequency and enclosure; fitting a coil of a different power class changes the valve pressure rating.

What does the V suffix mean?

V denotes FKM (Viton) seals, used for hydrocarbons and higher temperatures. E denotes EPDM, J CR (neoprene), T PTFE and A low-temperature NBR.

Can you supply rebuild kits instead of a complete valve?

Yes. Rebuild kits contain the core, disc, spring and seals for a given valve range and are quoted against the valve catalogue number.
