The GLC-LH-SMD is Cisco's gigabit long-reach optic for single-mode fibre: 1000BASE-LX/LH at 1310 nm over up to 10 km, with digital optical monitoring. It is the default choice for building-to-building, campus backbone and access-to-aggregation links, and, with the GLC-SX-MMD, the most searched-for Cisco optic in the Gulf markets we track.

Variants and part-number suffixes
GLC-LH-SMD replaced the earlier GLC-LH-SM, which has the same optical specification without digital optical monitoring. GLC-LH-SM is end-of-sale; GLC-LH-SMD is current.
For longer single-mode links Cisco offers GLC-EX-SMD (40 km) and GLC-ZX-SMD (70–80 km); for single-fibre links, the GLC-BX-U and GLC-BX-D pair. All are listed on the Cisco optics page.

Before you order
Cisco switches check the vendor code written into each module and will reject or flag an unsupported one, so give the switch model and IOS / IOS XE / NX-OS release with the enquiry. State whether you require genuine Cisco or will accept a Cisco-coded compatible module — we quote both as separate lines and never present one as the other. Is GLC-LH-SMD the same as GLC-LH-SM?
Same 1000BASE-LX/LH specification; the D version adds digital optical monitoring and is the current part. GLC-LH-SM is end-of-sale.
Can GLC-LH-SMD run over multimode fibre?
Yes, over short distances with a mode-conditioning patch cord at each end. For a dedicated multimode link the GLC-SX-MMD is the usual choice.
Which module do I need beyond 10 km?
GLC-EX-SMD for up to 40 km or GLC-ZX-SMD for up to 70–80 km over single-mode fibre.
