Steel plate and structural sections

CRS PLUS sources plate and structural steel for fabrication, tank building, platforms and pipe supports: carbon steel plate in structural and pressure-vessel grades, stainless plate, and structural sections — angles, channels, beams, hollow sections and round bar. Steel is quoted by grade, thickness or section size, plate dimensions or bar length, with mill test certificates.

How plate and sections are specified

A plate line gives thickness, width, length and grade — for example "Plate 8 × 2500 × 12000 mm, ASTM A36". A section line gives the profile, size, thickness and length — "Angle L50 × 50 × 6 mm × 6 m, A36" or "Hollow section 80 × 80 × 6 mm × 6 m". Where only the finished quantity is known, quantities can be stated in tonnes or in number of standard lengths and the quotation confirms the plate or bar count.

ASTM A36 is the common structural grade for platforms, supports, stairways and general fabrication. A283 Gr C and A516 Gr 70 are used for tank shells and bottoms and for pressure-retaining parts; A516 offers higher strength and toughness. Stainless 316L plate is used for internals and corrosive-service components.

Certification and marking

Plate and sections are supplied with EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificates showing chemistry and mechanical properties, traceable to the heat number marked on each plate or bundle. Ultrasonic testing of plate, impact testing at a stated temperature, and third-party inspection are added where the project specifies them.

Documentation and supply terms

Mill test certificate
EN 10204 3.1 certificate for every line, traceable to the heat number marked on the item. EN 10204 3.2 with third-party witness on request.
Marking
Material grade, size, rating and heat number marked on each item to the governing standard (MSS SP-25 for valves, flanges and fittings).
Inspection
Positive material identification, dimensional checks and third-party inspection arranged where the project specifies them.
Sour and low-temperature service
NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 hardness limits and impact testing applied where the piping class calls for them, and stated on the certificate.
Quotation
Each line states the standard, grade, origin, lead time and certification before you commit. Listing does not indicate stock held by CRS PLUS.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between A36 and SA-36?

ASTM A36 is the material standard; ASME SA-36 is the same specification adopted into the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code. Plate certified to SA-36 can be used where ASME code compliance is required. Many mills certify plate to both.

A36 or A516 Gr 70 plate?

A36 is a structural grade for general fabrication. A516 Gr 70 is a pressure-vessel grade with higher strength and controlled toughness, used for vessel shells and heads and often specified for storage tank shells in colder or more demanding service.

What is PFC?

PFC stands for parallel flange channel, a channel section whose flanges have parallel inner faces, making bolted connections simpler. It is widely used in platforms, frames and supports.

Can stainless and carbon steel be supplied in the same order?

Yes. Mixed orders of carbon and stainless plate, sections and bar are quoted together, with each line certified to its own standard.

Do you supply plate cut to size?

Plate is normally supplied in standard mill sizes. Where a bill of materials states cut sizes, the quotation shows the number of mill plates needed, and cutting can be quoted separately where available.
